Born in Germany, the FOODCOMMANDER grew up in Paris and Munich. He baked his first cake, a strawberry jellyroll, at age four. By the time he was nine, he had mastered his mother’s recipes (including a Sauce Béarnaise) and was feared by family and friends alike for his intransigent attitude towards proper food preparation. He began throwing his own dinner parties at age twelve, where his hand-rolled, unsweetened cocoa-flavored pasta with Mascarpone and Parmigiano became a signature dish. After high school, he went on to study Interior Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich to become a kitchen Designer and do away with kitsch in home kitchens once and for all. During his student years, he frequently moonlighted as a cook in a Venetian-style restaurant, where he was soon offered the position of Executive Chef. But after he had served his thousandth’s Polenta with squid ink stew to Lederhosen-clad customers and witnessed one of his professors reheat a Weisswurst in a microwave, he decided to leave Munich behind and set his eyes on the Big Apple. Once there, he worked for many of the city’s top caterers, learning the ins and outs of the industry, picking up Spanish kitchen slang, and tasting some of the best (and worst) food that money can buy. Eventually, he became a personal chef, cooking for dinner parties in the homes of well-heeled food aficionados from Manhattan to the Hamptons. During that time, he developed his theory that the way to learn how to prepare better food at home was not to be creative, but to bring order, discipline, and higher quality standards into the kitchen. Making this premise his new mission, he decided to produce his own cooking show in early 2005.
The FOODCOMMANDER show was first uploaded on YouTube in July 2006. There are currently 13 episodes available for free viewing, including an episode of outtakes and bloopers.
